Top IIT Colleges In India 2025: India has a system of engineering and technology colleges called the Indian Institutes of Technology (IIT). Established in 1950, they are governed by the Institutes of Technology Act, 1961 and are under the Ministry of Education’s purview in the Indian Government. The Act creates their roles, powers, and governance structure and names them Institutes of National Importance, recognizing them as the country’s top technology institutions.
The current tenor of this act applies to 23 IITs. Each IIT runs independently, but they are connected to one another by a common council known as the IIT Council, which is in charge of managing them. The IIT Council is chaired ex officio by the Indian Minister of Education. Approximately 38% of 2024 alumni of the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) have not found employment, according to data gathered through Right to Information (RTI) claims.
